What is the Middle Management Academy?
The Middle Management Academy uses didactic and hands-on, practical learning activities to provide behavioral healthcare middle managers with knowledge and skills that they can immediately use within their own organizations. The four-day event emphasizes the fundamental knowledge and skills of management, such as planning, leading meetings, using data to manage, setting goals, supervising employees, change management, productivity, understanding and using financial and analytical information, customer service, and performance management. Examples and context are drawn exclusively from behavioral healthcare, making it relevant to students.

What is the approach?
Participants work in small “virtual organizations,” where they implement the skills and knowledge they learn in such practical ways as running meetings, counseling employees, restructuring budgets, implementing performance measures, and planning changes to improve productivity. Each work group is composed of no more than 8 students, allowing for effective participation, and interaction with their “virtual CEO” – faculty member. Each faculty member works with two work groups throughout the four-days, providing coaching and feedback along the way.

Who should attend?
The Academy is especially appropriate for new managers, or people who have been promoted into or who have been working in management roles without much formal training. The supervision focus is on supervising employees (rather than supervisors) and the assumption about span of control focuses on the work team and cross-functional relationships with other work teams.

Who are the faculty?
Lee Ann Slayton, M.S., is the lead faculty member and curriculum developer for the MMA. She is a management consultant with more than 25 years of experience in public and private-sector health care. Ms Slayton brings demonstrated skills and experience in project management, teaching and coaching managers and management teams, strategic planning, and organizational change. Her personable and informal style coupled with a strong emphasis on improving the skills of her clients make her a good fit for value-oriented organizations working to improve their efficiency and effectiveness. She is highly skilled at helping teams and organizations solve problems through assessment, change management, team development, re-engineering specific business functions, and staff education. She is President of Slayton Consulting, LLC.

How long is the Academy?
The Academy incorporates four, full days of on-site training.
What is required of participants?
We ask each participant to commit to participate in the event and to attend the entire event. Each participant must also complete and return an informational survey as well as the organizational version of the Myers-Briggs Type Inventory prior to the on-site training.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
This registration notice is being sent only to executive directors of member organizations. Registration is limited to 18 participants - No more, no less. Registration is only being accepted online and will be solely based on a first-come/first-served basis.

*Cost: Approximately $750 per participant. The Academy limits attendance to 18 participants for each Academy session. If participation is less than 18, the cost may need to be adjusted.
